A Franklin police officer was on Interstate 75 around 11:27 p.m. Tuesday when radar clocked two vehicles going 103 mph. The officer pulled onto the highway and activated the cruiser’s overhead lights. One of the vehicles slowed and pulled over to the left and the officer continued to follow the second vehicle, which was still going at a high rate of speed, according to police.

The vehicle, a gold Honda, took the state Route 123 exit while going 114 mph and turned left. The Honda then turned onto I-75 North. The chase continued onto state Route 73, heading into Franklin.

The pursuit went through Franklin, Carlisle, Miami Twp. and Jefferson Twp. before going into Dayton. The Honda continued to speed, running multiple stop signs and red lights, according to police.

While on Germantown Street at the Stolz Avenue intersection in Dayton, the Honda hit a Chevrolet Impala attempting to turn.

“The suspect vehicle struck the Impala on the passenger side rear door, ripping the vehicle in half and throwing the rear of the vehicle approximately 30 feet into a front yard,” according to police. “A tire also came loose and struck a residence, destroying a pillar on the front porch.”

The Honda spun multiple times before coming to a stop. The officer notified dispatch of the crash and requested medics before pulling up to the Honda and blocking the driver side door.

A Dayton officer arrived as the Franklin officer held the driver, later identified as Schoby, at gunpoint and shouted commands. The Dayton officer used a cruiser to pin the Honda’s passenger side door.

Because the vehicle was pinned on both sides, the Franklin officer used a baton to break the driver side window, according to police. The driver was then ordered to exit the vehicle.

He reportedly did not comply immediately, so police removed him.

The passenger in the Honda was unable to get out of the vehicle. The man told police he had a gun on him and as officers worked to determine the best way to remove the gun, the Honda’s engine caught fire, according to police.

A fire extinguisher was used to put out the fire and Dayton police were able to remove the gun from his hip.

Dayton firefighters arrived on scene and cut the door off the Honda to free the the passenger. He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital for an evaluation.

Schoby was taken to Kettering Health Franklin. He was evaluated and released to police before being booked the Warren County Jail, according to police.

The occupants of the second vehicle involved in the crash refused treatment at the scene, Franklin police said.
